Failed to work out last night

I've been running a sleep deficit for the past few days. Last night, I went home thinking I'll get right on the elliptical and do my workout and head off the bed early. That didn't happen. Lol!

I got home and decided to take a nap on the bed first. The next thing I knew, it was morning and I had to get up to go to work! How horrible! Not only did I not get a chance to work out, but I splurged on oreos and bubble tea! I hope this hasn't undone the entire week's worth of effort!

Thinking of doing an iPod wedding

I've been obsessed with TheKnot.com these days. I'm especially obsessed with its budgeter feature. Unfortunately for us, the venue and the dress has already set us up to break our budget, which by the way, isn't that small. Considering our budget constraints, I am trying really hard to think of ways to reduce our planned wedding expenditures.

One of the ideas I came across was doing an iPod wedding! No musicians or cheesy DJs, just a good ol' iPod hooked up to a sound system. After checking out PA rentals in the NYC area, we can rent a PA system with microphones for just under $300! TheKnot.com budgeted over a thousand dollars just for music. If we go with the iPod wedding route, we can save a LOT of money! The biggest drawback to this would be that whoever I assign to handle the music may not have much time to have fun, and/or mingle. Still, I am really enamored of this idea right now - not just because we can save money, but we can also control the playlist. I really would not want to do the Mararena or the Chicken Dance at our wedding.

Anyways, it's still under discussion, but I really hope to get this through!

Lost some pound-age!

So a week or two before I left for vacation, I had lost about a pound or two. I was so happy. After vacation, I gained it all back! Now, two weeks after vacation, I've lost those two pounds plus an extra half pound! I am finally a little further than when I first started! I am psyched! Very happy :-)

So today is the second day of me trying to eat something small every two hours, while still staying within my calorie range. I bought a bunch of bananas and am having one every morning with my cup of coffee and plan to continue having bananas or some other fruit for breakfast. I think that's a pretty good start for each day.

In terms of exercise, I don't want to sound too optimistic about my ability to keep at it, but so far, I've been able to squeeze in 30 minutes on my mini-elliptical while watching TV. Now I just need to make sure I do some strength training and stretches at least every other day on top of the cardio. For now though, the minimum will be 30 minutes a day on the mini-elliptical.

Well, I'm still psyched about the half pound lost! I think I'll reward myself with a small aquisition from Etsy.com! Lol! This could end up being a very expensive weight loss program...

Best eye makeup remover!

You want to know what it is? It's extra virgin olive oil! Yes, that's right! Good ol' olive oil takes off even waterproof mascara! Just take a cotton ball with some extra virgin olive oil on it and place it on your eye. If it's a stubborn kind of waterproof makeup you got on, then leave it on for about 30 seconds. Then wipe off! For really stubborn waterproof makeup, follow with a gentle facial cleanser. Personally, I've never had to use a cleanser afterwards as the makeup will usually just wipe right off. The cool thing about this is not only does olive oil not have lots of weird chemicals in it, it's good for you eye area and it really works!

The dress saga: Part 2

I had pretty much set my heart on purchasing a dress from RK Bridal because all the dresses I really liked were under thousand bucks, which meant there would be money in my dress budget for alterations. It's a fantastic feeling to know you're coming in under budget on something!

However, I did feel that maybe I hadn't tried on enough dresses or checked out enough places. So I went back online to look for bridal shops that sell dresses for under an thousand dollars. Wedding Atelier came up and it actually got some decent reviews on Yelp.com. So I made an appointment to take a look.

Unfortunately, Wedding Atelier was not really a pleasant experience. Although the place is very airy and clean, the prices were not low. The cheaper dresses were too informal-looking and the lady helping me was very snotty. The first thing they asked was my budget, and I quoted a higher budget than I actually wanted to spend because I immediately got the feeling that they don't treat you very nice if you don't have some money. I didn't quote anything too high, but definitely higher than I wanted to spend. The consultant did not pull out dresses for me at all, basically telling me to look at the price tags and dresses myself and pull them out. Considering this is supposed to be a full-service boutique, I was NOT happy about this attitude. Even the discount shop found dresses for me to try on that I didn't pull out.

Anyways, I tried on a bunch of dresses and really liked one of them. By the way, they had chinese dresses too, but I didn't really like any of them. The dress I liked came under my quoted budget and was more than I originally wanted to spend. It was only that "cheap" because it was on sale. I took a picture of myself in the dress when I was alone and sent it to my bridesmaids. Almost unanimously, they liked this dress better than the previous pictures I sent. Granted, the previous ones were on models, but this dress also appealed in terms of style.

I went home that day thinking I'll just find a knock-off online or find the designer and dress at a discount shop for cheaper. Unfortunately, I couldn't find the dress anywhere! I couldn't even find the designer! I started thinking the boutique lied about the designer when they said it was a sub-brand of Pronovias because I couldn't find that dress in ANY site related to Pronovias! I even posted a picture of the dress I took in the boutique on weddingbee.com message boards to see if any of those awesomely helpful girls could identify it, but no luck there either.

That night, I dreamed of that dress. Generally, when I'm unsure of whether or not I want to buy something, my rule is: If it won't haunt you, don't get it. Well, it's haunting me! So the next day, I called Wedding Atelier and made an appointment to go back and purchase the dress. They sounded very happy over the phone.

I left work early to get there and I try the dress on one more time. As I'm standing in front of the mirror, I made the final decision to buy the dress. The consultant that first helped me gave me a big smile and then said, "Oh my, I'm sorry but the price you want it at is for the sample dress, not a brand new one that would be ordered in your size." So now she's trying to push the sample dress on me and I'm shocked by the sudden turn of events! The cost of a new dress is WAY out of my budget and I told her that she knew what my budget was and I just can't afford it. So, seeing that I'm not budging on that, she went to talk with the manager and was able to say she can order me a new dress for couple hundred dollars more than the sample. At this point, I'm fuming at feeling like I've been played. Seeing how unhappy I was, she said if I got the sample dress, she can waive the storage fee until my first fitting next year and they'll only charge $575 for any and all alterations I needed done. At this point, I think we both know I didn't want to let the dress go. At this point, I was also really upset but couldn't show it.

So I decided to just buy the sample dress and take it home. I was gonna take the dress and never go back there again. So they drew up a contract that states that I paid for the dress in full and will take it home with me. As they're drawing up the contract, the manager comes out and despite what the consultant said about the $575 fee covers all alterations and not to worry about extra fees, the manager says, "We'll put down $575 as the quoted price on your contract, but should you take the dress back to us for alterations next year, the price may or may not be higher by 25 to 75 dollars." WTF?!?! Always, they seem to be pulling a fast one on my money at the last minute! Truly, they are experts at fleecing people!

So I now have the sample dress lying on a couch in the apartment. It has a slight tear in the lace on the back near the zipper, but it's a small tear and probably repairable. The dress is fairly clean, even on the bottom where the skirt drags on the floor, so I'll probably not risk ruining it by getting it cleaned before I wear it.

Overall, I hated the dress shopping experience and I hated the bridal shops and the people who work there. There are so many bridal shop horror stories that you can't discount them all. Now, I have one of my own to tell. I just hate being lied to or misled, but for Wedding Atelier to do it as a force of habit or ritual just seems really slimy to me. And yes, I do believe they do this often because you don't get to be this skilled at fleecing people if you haven't had lots of practice.

So while I got the dress I wanted, the nasty experience has kept me from loving it. I'm filled with worry because I don't know how it's going to look after the alterations are done. Not only does it need to be hemmed, but the sides will need to be taken in at least 2 dress sizes. Also, it's a complicated dress with many layers in the skirt and beautiful lace on the top. The alterations are going to cost a lot and I'm afraid that in the end, for all that I've spent on this dress, I won't love it or the seamstress is going to suck and I'll look terrible at my own wedding!

What wedding horrors have yet to unfold before me?

The dress saga: Part 1

My fiancee says that he's never seen a girl shop the way I do. The way he describes it, I walk into a shop, quickly glance at the racks and finger one or two items and if I don't see anything promising overall, I walk right out. Honestly, I just don't have the patience to sift through everything and now that I'm so much fatter, I don't have the heart to look at all the clothes I can't fit into anymore. The other thing is, now that I've taken some very basic sewing lessons, I'd really rather practice my sewing skills to make something that actually fits me than buy something off the rack that probably wouldn't look as nice on me.

That is not to say I don't like shopping or don't spend money! I have spent lots and lots of money on fabric, thread and other sewing notions. I have also spent a great deal on household items like gourmet foods and materials I want to try cooking or baking with. So I do spend, but mostly on hobbies.

So now I have to buy a wedding dress. I started at theknot.com to look at their massive database of dresses for ideas. In the end, however, I know I can never really know what I like in those dresses until I start trying them on. So I started looking at bridal shops. After looking at all the horror stories and reviews of bridal shops, I wasn't sure I even wanted to deal with one anymore, but I had to start somewhere.

So my first stop was the Demetrios boutique inside the Macy's on 34th Street. We didn't have an appointment, but we were able to get in an hour later anyways. My cousin and I pulled several dresses off the racks but in general, we didn't feel all that impressed with the selection. Then the consultant helped me into the dresses one by one. There were a couple of them that looked okay on me, but to be honest, I felt completely fat and shapeless for most of them. The day ended with me feeling like I'll be the ugliest, most shapeless bride on my wedding day. It was a horrible feeling and it made me sad.

My next stop was RK Bridal. This time, I went by myself. I felt that it's best to try on a huge bunch and only show to my friends and family the dresses that I've narrowed it down to. That way, my initial impressions wouldn't be subject to everyone's opinions. Anyways, RK Bridal is a warehouse of dresses at discount prices and no appointment was necessary. Perfect for my budget needs! I left work early on a Friday and was able to try on about 8 or 9 dresses. The limit was supposed to be 7 dresses, but I guess the lady who was helping me was in a good mood. I had to butter her up a bit to get her into a good mood though. She was pretty rude to me at first. I mean she didn't look at me and just ordered me into the dressing room and would walk away from me without telling me what's next or what to do or even that she was going to walk away! Anyways, I found 4 dresses that I liked on me. I found them online and sent them to my bridesmaids for feedback. Everyone seemed to like a different set of dresses, so in the end, I still needed to take someone back to the store and see what they look like on me in person.

And the next and last stop was the Wedding Atelier...

Wedding venues

The first place we looked at was F.E.A.S.T. at Round Hill. It's a small, cozy place upstate with a beautiful garden and a gazebo. They have a bridal suite in the building and the dining area is in a section separate, but not separated from the dance floor, which appealed to my fiancee (still can't get used to calling him that!). They had availability for the date we wanted, September 5, the Sunday of Labor Day weekend, but because it's a holiday weekend, they would be charging us the higher Saturday prices. We really liked the place, so we thought about cutting down costs by choosing the Sunday after, which would be much, much cheaper.

The second place we looked at was Catlin Gardens, which is also upstate. The place was absolutely gorgeous! It doesn't have an actual bridal suite, but they do have a room that can be used as one. They have a lot of strict rules and are not flexible when it comes to what you can and cannot do at your own wedding, but I just fell in love with the beautiful flowers, waterways and adorable sculptures. Unfortunately, the place is also expensive! It's about as expensive as F.E.A.S.T. on a peak Saturday, so maybe it's not really that much more. Still, it's more than I wanted to spend originally. Still, we asked them to hold September 12th for us, as the 5th was already taken. In the end, I think I've settled my heart on this place.

A contract proposal was sent out this past Monday and boy is this going to cost us! The proposal is really just for the basic minimum, which means most likely, it's going to cost more! Ah well, looks like I'll have to increase and re-work our wedding budget. Anyways, we will be speaking with the sales rep on Monday and we may send in the retainer fee then. Fingers crossed and everything goes smoothly!

Wedding planning - the start

So now that I'm engaged, the rush to plan the wedding starts now! Right now, we've set the date for sometime in September, preferably Labor Day weekend, or somewhere around then. It's still peak wedding season, but at least the weather should still be nice enough for an outdoor wedding. Honestly, that's what I'm leaning towards.

So here's what I did to get started. I registered on www.theknot.com and looked through most of the site. I particularly like its database of dresses. I also started searching for DIY wedding projects to keep our budget in check. Some very helpful wedding forums are on www.weddingbee.com and some great DIY projects are listed on www.stylemepretty.com. For venues, though www.theknot.com has some great venue listings for the NYC area, I also found www.weddingsitesandservices.com helpful.

After trolling through message boards and trying to get a battle plan together, I decided that everything has to come after we book the venue. We can't even set a date until we book a venue. At least, that's how I feel. I used www.weddingsitesandservices.com to create a list of places within our price range and did both ceremony and reception. I also gave preference to places that did only one event at a time. Once I made an initial list, I spent time looking at websites of the venues (many of which either suck or aren't informative at all!) and crossed off any that didn't have photos to boast of. After looking at the ones left, I realized that I leaned towards ones that offered a garden wedding. That crossed off even more places. In the end, there were only a handful of venues that I wanted to see in person.

Next stop, checking out the venues!

Back to battling the bulge!

So I'm about 2 weeks back from vacation and I feel that I am now back on track in my battle against my bulge! I had lost about two pounds before I left for vacation and then gained it back during. Now that I'm back, I've spent two weeks getting back into better eating and exercise habits. Unfortunately, I am not back to my pre-vacation weight, but I have seem to have lost half an inch to an inch around the waist. That's pretty encouraging!

So how did I get back into the habit? I faithfully logged almost everything I ate every day and also logged the amount of exercise I did each day. I started with a goal to restrict my caloric intake and exercise at least 25 minutes on my mini-elliptical, a minimum of 15 on the mini-elliptical if doing strength training that day. The result is that I ate better foods and I ate less over all. Portion control is something that I am learning from this. At first, keeping to a daily schedule of this was hard. I hate exercising and as soon as the intensity got a little hard for me, I wanted to quit. I took lots of breaks, but eventually started to feel better about the routine. Now I can keep it up with more ease than when I first started.

Going forward, I want to change up my routine. Not only would changing things make things interesting for me, but it keeps my body from getting too used to the old routine, thus slowing down my momentum. Also, restricting my caloric intake like I was doing before, I worry about my body going into "famine" mode, even though it has quite a bit of "stored energy" to use up! So here's the revised plan:

- Eat something small and preferably healthy about every two hours
- Increase exercise minimum from 15 to 30 minutes every day
- Increase repetitions for strength training exercises

Now that a battle plan is set for the next two weeks, time to reward myself for the past two weeks' hard work! I just bought myself a very cute pair of earrings from Etsy.com! Can't wait to receive them!
