Wedding planning - the start

So now that I'm engaged, the rush to plan the wedding starts now! Right now, we've set the date for sometime in September, preferably Labor Day weekend, or somewhere around then. It's still peak wedding season, but at least the weather should still be nice enough for an outdoor wedding. Honestly, that's what I'm leaning towards.

So here's what I did to get started. I registered on www.theknot.com and looked through most of the site. I particularly like its database of dresses. I also started searching for DIY wedding projects to keep our budget in check. Some very helpful wedding forums are on www.weddingbee.com and some great DIY projects are listed on www.stylemepretty.com. For venues, though www.theknot.com has some great venue listings for the NYC area, I also found www.weddingsitesandservices.com helpful.

After trolling through message boards and trying to get a battle plan together, I decided that everything has to come after we book the venue. We can't even set a date until we book a venue. At least, that's how I feel. I used www.weddingsitesandservices.com to create a list of places within our price range and did both ceremony and reception. I also gave preference to places that did only one event at a time. Once I made an initial list, I spent time looking at websites of the venues (many of which either suck or aren't informative at all!) and crossed off any that didn't have photos to boast of. After looking at the ones left, I realized that I leaned towards ones that offered a garden wedding. That crossed off even more places. In the end, there were only a handful of venues that I wanted to see in person.

Next stop, checking out the venues!
